The Magic of Raw Foods Cuisine with Paul Benhaim

This is a most informative and even entertaining "cooking" show DVD. Paul Benhaim has modelled this presentation as a typical TV cooking show. It is fast moving and has great music and visuals.

Paul Benhaim is a living legend. I have often wondered at his energy and how he gets so much done, and now I know it is due to his raw food diet.

As a father of two, I am always looking out for quick, nutritious meals that actually taste good for the children - so I was most pleased to find recipes that I'm going to be able to put together soon after writing this review, including a blueberry almond smoothie, beetroot soup, a macadamia pie, Thai curry, and a bunch of lunchtime treats.

During the course of the show, you visit local organic farms and permaculture gardens (by local, I mean northeastern New South Wales and southeast Queensland, Australia) and see how various fruits and veges are picked and prepared. The whole show is packed with useful tips.

Paul is also well known for his industrial hemp products and capaigning. He is a living demonstration that a raw food diet makes you look years younger and feel much healthier. Get this DVD!

I was intrigued about Not The Cooking Show as I have always been interested in healthy diet options, but have always liked to follow my own intuition and the raw food diet has attracted me  as it follows the basic laws of nature.

When I received the packaged I was surprised by the high quality production - this is not your 'made-at-home' effort but a professionally produced DVD9 (equivalent to two full regular DVDs), packaged in a great looking white case with glossy disc. When the DVD starts up I was expecting to get straight into the show, but what I found was an animated menu full of strange looking fruit and vegetable characters. I was intrigued and found myself watching for what seemed like ages as each character-full animation jumped around the living interactive menu screens. Breaking out of my spellbound look I was offered three options: Not The Cooking Show, Promo and Special Features.

I am one of those that always goes straight to the special features when available so not to disappoint I jumped straight there to find myself in another world of menus offering recipes, information about the crew, a resource list and interviews.

The resource list consisted of 17 different products/services represented in the show, each with their own graphical page, further information link (most often website) and some with extra videos! The crew pages contained links to the four main members of the team - with other clips of productions by the co-producer Aran Major (AzInc). Paul Benhaim's page consisted of not 1, but 2 interviews in different settings - both amazing looking sets, a list of all of Paul's books (not just on raw foods!) and a seven page biography which is fascinating reading in itself. Is he really one man?! The recipes, a thought would be a list of what is on the show, but again I was impressed to see a long list of recipes from the show and a number of extras. Each recipe has its own page or two with funky special video and sound effects to keep you bopping while you take down your notes. 'Hidden' in this menu are three extra bonus clips or Director's cut recipes totalling more than 15 minutes of extra viewing time. And still on the extra viewing if you go to the interview section you have Paul's two interviews which describe his philosophy and wisdom on raw foods and how it can be easily integrated into your diet without any major changes. He makes it so simple and you just want to dive in! There are also in depth interviews with scientist and long-term raw fooder Sapoty Brook who describes everything about his natural and simple method of raw foods. Dr John Fielder interviewed in what looks like a permaculturists heaven, describes how he energetically scoots around the world giving lectures on Natural Hygeine whilst being based in his Tropical North Australian retreat centre - whilst 70 years of age. Wow. Then  there is an unusual choice - Greg Neville. Greg's a psychotherapist who believes that emotions are what cause disease and has written extensive and published documents supporting the connection between various emotions and their respective diseases. I had to watch this twice.

Having had a (juice) break I was ready for the main showing and enjoyed the high resolution viewable on my projector screen. Using the arrow and menu buttons on your remote control made it is easy to navigate the hierarchical structure of Not The Cooking Show DVD. The DVD had already paid for itself with more useful and useable information that I have gained from any living food recipe book so far.

The show was all that I had hoped for - a highly energetic show - this guy is passionate! Paul clearly shows (I love easy), simple ways to create (my favourite) Yum Thai Curry, Sweet Macadamia Pie, Carob Mousse and many other recipes. Mixed with each recipe is either a clip of Paul visiting farms (I loved the blueberry farm), health food stores with informative interviews that made the whole show enjoyable. Interesting facts kept popping up, being introduced by our friendly animated Avocado, Banana, Mango, Celery and others - facts such as what macadamias contain, why blueberries are good for you etc. At the end of each recipe segment the actual ingredient list is there so you can press pause and write it all down. The only machines used in the program are a twin-gear juicer, a high quality blender, a dehydrator and a spaghetti machine or 'spiraliser'. The show ends with Paul feeding the crew some raw foods in a spa - and if you let the credits go to the end Not The Cooking Show completes the package with another extra bonus.

My rating is ***** 5 stars - highly recommended - the first mainstream quality DVD in the raw food movement. Looking forward to seeing Paul's goal of a TV series realise itself soon.

And having watched the first episode (and checked out the numerous extra recipes found on the new DVD), I am convinced that raw foods can be quick, simple and just as delicious. I particularly enjoyed the topping for his Macadamia Pie with the raw dairy-free ‘ice-cream' (I didn't bother with the pie base).

Paul prefers to share the practical side of Raw Foods. The DVD gives all sides of the story- including interviews with a Natural Hygienist Doctor, a scientist and a psychotherapist as well as an in-depth interview with Paul. The evidence is quite conclusive and, unlike much of the medical profession, the crew is not sponsored by hundreds of chemical corporations.

The proof is in the pudding (try Lemon Meringue or Chocolate Cake Supreme on page 36 and 40 of Living Food Recipes!).

THE FACTS

Living foods are the key to our health and longevity. They allow our bodies to perform as they were meant to. Our bodies have evolved over a four million year period. For 3,950,000 of those years we ate only raw, living foods. It is only recently that we have begun eating cooked food. When we look at other mammals in nature, we do not see any significant incidence of the diseases that have become pervasive in humans. No cancer, heart disease, strokes or diabetes. There is a clear link between the increase in these diseases and the addition of cooked foods to our diet.
Cooking denatures the proteins in our food, rendering them harder to digest and utilize. Cooking destroys 50 percent of the protein in our food, and 50 and 80 percent of the vitamins and minerals are lost.

Pesticides break down into more toxic compounds which are more easily assimilated into our bodies. Oxygen is lost and free radicals are produced.
Most importantly, enzymes are destroyed when food is heated above 118 degrees. Enzymes are the catalysts of every chemical reaction in our bodies. Without them, there can be no cellular division, immune system functioning, energy production or brain activity. Vitamins and hormones cannot do their work without enzymes.

FACT: When you ingest cooked food, your body acts as if it has been poisoned. White blood cells are produced and rush to your defence. If you include at least 50% raw food in each meal, this is much less more likely to happen.

FACT: All forms of cooking change the structure of the cells within the food. For example, when a potato is baked, over 400 new chemicals are produced.

FACT: When blood is used in transfusions, it is sometimes warmed first. Once, a nurse warmed the blood in a microwave instead of in the usual way. The patient was killed. If microwaving doesn't do anything other than simply heat food, this could not have happened.
